Premises Monitoring Renovation JH002-Kingston, Jamaica 090827

Equipment installation went forward without too much trouble. The need to replace equipment is illustrated in the close-up photo of a two year old housing & camera. The original cheaper equipment did not benefit the budget since it had to be replaced to achieve the minimum results expected by the client and his family when the system went into operation.

Phase one was quite a painful experience. All wireways installed for the original special systems were either too small, crushed, blocked or lost in walls or underground.  There were no as built plans or schematics and despite all efforts to contact all the original installers, none of those who we did find remembered where anything was. Property owners take heed. The money you think you’ve saved in the beginning will be lost as cost for repair and reinstallation of an improper or inadequate system. If properly designed and installed wireways and conduit should need minimal changes to upgrade with improvements in technology over decades of use. While adding infrastructure to cross the finished driveway we took advantage to repair an erosion problem that was dislocating finished pavers. Simple and proper PVC pipes put in the ground during construction could have saved most of this work.

Premises Monitoring Renovation JH002-Kingston, Jamaica 090620

This is our Preliminary Camera Location Survey for a residence with less than 2 year old, pre-existing premises monitoring and alarm systems. The residence was broken into from the most vulnerable point on the property. The previous contractor had provided no monitoring of that area. There was no protection on the window used to enter the residence. The owner and Artzen Consulting believe that it was an inside job but also feel if the area would have been properly protected there would have been, at minimum, video evidence of the crime and ultimately there would have been no entry into the residence. Phase 1 of our premises monitoring system will provide 200% coverage of the property perimeter. Basically anyone that moves onto the property will be instantly caught on camera from a minimum of 2 directions. We are using the most advanced, server based, ip camera software. Recordings from all cameras archive with a time code allowing perfect sync when playing back recorded motion events.

Observations on the Techniques Records project

Completed final additions to the blog for the Techniques Records project this weekend. To say it was a catharsis to just finish general journaling is an understatement.

I was commissioned to repurpose the Techniques Records building over six years ago but could not start the project right away. We were extremely busy at the time and I had some reservations ( I was reluctant to take a commission in the heart of downtown Kingston for, if you know anything about downtown Kingston, obvious reasons). What made me decide to do it was my love of the original Jamaican music. Mento, Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae. I would be building a world class studio at the epicenter of the original, historic Jamaican record business that rocked the entire world. My client, Winston Riley, along with several local politicians and myself felt it could be a catalyst to bring the music world and some economic renewal back to the neighborhood. And so we went forward.

Jumping to the present day I realize conditions “downtown” are too hard for one person or a small group to change, it has to be a revolution. A sweeping change to wipe out all the bad in one shot. The ingrained social behavior and corruption will always destroy the little bit of good that comes along. To plant a seed and grow a flower is a wonderful thing for all to see and appreciate year after year. It can be destroyed by a vandal in seconds to never grow again.

Nearly completed studios and support spaces, fresh paint and fabric. All surfaces covered with a layer of thick black soot from the floor below. It could have been much worse had we not just installed secondary doors to the studio. Most of the smoke came up the back stairs and through a single opening meant for kitchen ventilation equipment not yet installed. Front windows were melted and coming out of their openings but quick response by local fire department prevented further damage. At this time Artzen Consulting has been dismissed by the owner due to financial problems brought on by the fire. We wish Mr. Winston Riley all the best as he moves to restore his business.

Partial first floor clean-up at our project site complete. Awaiting word on when water and power may be restored. As you can see the heat of the fire was so intense it literally melted the windows out of their openings.

Sometime in the early morning hours of September 3, 2009 our project site @ 99 Orange street was fire bombed. The first floor retail space was a total loss. The studios on the 2nd floor sustained heavy smoke damage. All services to the building were a total loss.
